What We Do
We believe that meaningful conservation begins with curiosity — and we aim to spark that curiosity through data-driven research, engaging educational content, and products that celebrate the beauty and complexity of the natural world.
Nature-Inspired Products
From children’s books and field guides to art prints, stickers, and other creative media, our products are designed to bring the wonder of biodiversity into everyday life.
Education and Outreach
We develop educational materials, workshops, and presentations to foster environmental and biological literacy among students, educators, and the public.
Wildlife & Nature Photography
Our photography documents the hidden beauty of the natural world — from rare cave fauna to Southeastern forest life. We offer educational, editorial, and fine-art images that highlight the importance of conservation and tell the stories of ecosystems few ever see firsthand.
Ecological Research & Consulting
We conduct biological surveys, habitat assessments, and conservation-focused studies across subterranean, terrestrial, aquatic ecosystems. Our specialties include cave and karst biology, endangered species monitoring, and biodiversity data integration.
Our Story
Niemiller Nature grew from a shared belief that the study of nature and science is most powerful when it is both rigorous and relatable. Long before Niemiller Nature LLC became a company and our family grew, it was simply a way of life—field days spent exploring caves and streams, evenings turning research questions into lessons, and conversations about how to help others see the beauty and importance of the natural world.
Through years of work in ecology, conservation, and education, Denise and Matthew noticed a growing challenge: biodiversity naivety—the increasing disconnect between people and the diversity of life that surrounds them. Many of the species and ecosystems most in need of conservation are also the least familiar, hidden underground, active at night, or overlooked entirely. When people don’t know what exists, it becomes harder to care about protecting it.
Niemiller Nature LLC was created to help address that gap. By combining ecological research, education, outreach, photography, and creative products, we work to make biodiversity visible, relatable, and meaningful. Whether through a scientific study, a classroom activity, a photograph, or a children’s book, our goal is to help people recognize the richness of life—both above and below ground—and understand why it matters.
As a family-owned business, Niemiller Nature LLC reflects the values that guide our work. Our children, River and Evie, are a constant source of inspiration. They help test designs, explore ideas, and occasionally join us in the field, reminding us to see nature with curiosity, empathy, and wonder. Their perspective keeps our work grounded in the next generation—the one that will inherit the ecosystems we study and strive to protect.
Today, Niemiller Nature LLC continues to evolve as a place where science, creativity, and family intersect. We are committed to reducing biodiversity naivety by sharing stories of overlooked species and ecosystems, fostering curiosity through education and art, and inspiring a deeper connection between people and the natural world.
We invite you to explore alongside us—through research, education, art, and storytelling—and to join us in celebrating the natural world.
Meet Our Team

K. Denise Kendall Niemiller, Ph.D.
Mother, Biologist, Researcher, Educator, Naturalist
Denise Niemiller is an educator and ecologist with a passion for teaching, science communication, and conservation. She was formerly a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Biological Sciences at The University of Alabama in Huntsville, where she taught a range of undergraduate courses and was deeply involved in research, student learning, and mentorship.
Denise earned her A.A. in Biology from Pellissippi State Technical Community College and her B.S. and Ph.D. in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology from the University of Tennessee. She completed postdoctoral research at the University of Kentucky and held several teaching and program leadership roles at the University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign, including laboratory coordinator and Merit Program Director.
Her interests span formal and informal STEM education, ecology, evolution, and conservation biology. Through Niemiller Nature LLC, Denise leads the development of educational materials, nature-inspired products, and outreach initiatives that make science engaging, accessible, and creative for learners of all ages.
Matthew L. Niemiller, Ph.D.
Father, Biologist, Researcher, Educator, Naturalist
Matthew Niemiller is an ecologist and naturalist with a passion for understanding and conserving biodiversity, especially in caves and groundwater systems. His work focuses on the genetics, ecology, and conservation of species living in some of the planet’s most hidden environments, as well as a wide range of surface-dwelling animals including fishes, amphibians, reptiles, birds, mammals, and invertebrates.
Matthew earned his B.S. and M.S. in Biology from Middle Tennessee State University and a Ph.D. in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology from the University of Tennessee. He completed postdoctoral research at Yale University, the University of Kentucky, and the Illinois Natural History Survey before joining The University of Alabama in Huntsville, where he is currently an Associate Professor of Ecology. He regularly teaches courses in ecology, biogeography, herpetology, ornithology, cave biology, and conservation-related topics.
He has authored or co-authored more than 150 scientific papers, book chapters, and books, including The Amphibians of Tennessee, The Reptiles of Tennessee, and multiple field guides on cave life in the southeastern United States and Ozarks. Matthew is also an active speaker, educator, and contributor to conservation organizations, serving in leadership and advisory roles for several regional and national scientific and conservation groups.
Through Niemiller Nature LLC, Matthew brings together research, education, and photography to share the beauty and importance of biodiversity and to inspire conservation through both science and storytelling.

River & Evie Niemiller
CHILDREN, BUDDING NATURALISTS, CREATIVE DESIGN & QUALITY CONTROL
River (age 4) and Evie (age 2) are the heart and inspiration behind Niemiller Nature. They remind us every day why curiosity, creativity, and a love for nature matter.
River and Evie help us “test” designs, books, and educational materials—offering honest feedback, big imaginations, and lots of enthusiasm. They’ve also joined us in the field on age-appropriate research outings, learning firsthand about wildlife, ecosystems, and the joy of discovery.
Their curiosity fuels our creativity, and their sense of wonder inspires everything we do—from research and education to photography and nature-inspired products. We hope that through our work, we can help protect the natural world they (and future generations) will grow up exploring.
